Use your PCIe card (full height, half length) with Thunderbolt computers
Ultra-light notebooks and all-in-one desktop computers are extremely small and light these days. However, these powerful and flexible computers do not offer the option of installing a PCIe card. Mac and Windows computers that have Thunderbolt™ 3 ports can, however, be expanded externally. The Sonnet Echo Express SE I as Thunderbolt 3 Edition allows you to connect a single PCIe card externally to your computer. The compact expansion enclosure supports a professional video capture, audio interface, 6Gb or 12Gb SAS or SATA host bus adapter, 8Gb or 16Gb Fibre Channel, 10Gb or 40Gb Ethernet or a RAID controller PCIe card. The whole thing is connected to your computer via a thin cable.
The 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 interface of the Echo Express SE I is twice as fast as a Thunderbolt 2 interface. With a bandwidth of up to 2750 MB/s, 4K video capture and editing cards can be operated at high frame rates, as well as 16Gb FC cards and dual 10GbE cards at their full performance. Thunderbolt 3 not only supports the fastest PCIe cards, but also up to two 4K displays at 60 Hz or one 5K display at 60 Hz. A range of Thunderbolt and USB peripherals are also supported.
One PCIe 3.0 slot and space for a daughter card
The Thunderbolt 3 Edition of the Echo Express SE I has a x8 PCIe slot and supports PCIe cards with half length, full height and single or double width. Double width? Some professional video and audio interface cards, such as a Blackmagic Design DeckLink 4K Extreme or RME HDSPe MADI FX, have an additional IO card, a so-called daughter card. This is installed next to the actual PCIe card.
Almost any Thunderbolt 3 compatible PCIe card is supported
The Thunderbolt 3 Edition of the Echo Express SE I was designed for 19.7 cm long cards. With its compact dimensions of just 14.2 cm (width) by 8.9 cm (length), it has a small footprint and yet can accommodate almost any Thunderbolt 3-compatible PCIe 1.1, PCIe 2.0 and PCIe 3.0 card.
